Practical Life

Quiet Fix

Five Fields Most Teams Don't Need

A practical decluttering piece about low-value metadata and the burden of unnecessary fields. Each field should earn its keep.

Every field asks for attention. Many do not earn it. Remove the fields that do not route, decide, or automate anything.

The criteria

Before keeping any field

  • Does it change who sees the work or how it flows?
  • Does it drive a report you actually read and use?
  • Is it required by a compliance obligation?
If a field does not change a decision, remove it.

Common culprits

Often safe to remove

  • Component when you do not route or report by it.
  • Target version if release notes are written from commits instead.
  • Environment when bugs are captured with reproduction steps elsewhere.
  • Story points for teams that measure flow with cycle time.
  • Epic link on work types that never roll up.

Remove safely

A gentle sequence

  • Measure fill rate for the last ninety days.
  • Ask who uses the field in a report. Name the report.
  • Hide the field for two weeks and watch for questions.
  • If no breakage, remove from screens and schemes. Archive data rather than delete it.
